Top asylum destinations

Belgium is the 10th most preferred destination for asylum seekers, according the UNHCR.

In 2006 Belgium received 11,590 asylum applications, which is 25% less than 2005.

The top asylum seekers destinations are the US (51,510, +6%), France (30,690), UK (27,850), Sweden ( 24.320), Canada (22.910), Germany (21.030), The Netherlands (14.470), Austria (13.350) and Greece (12.270).

The five countries leading the asylum charts are Iraq (22,200, +77%), China (18.257, -%), Russia (15.730, -27%), Servië-Montenegro ( 15.647, -29%) and Turkey (8.700, -27%).

There has been an increase in asylum seekers from Lebanon (+66%), Eritrea (+59%) and Bangladesh (+42%).
