Norway: Somalis, Afghans and Iraqis top list of new citizens

Norway attracted 14,300 new citizens last year and around 2,100 came from Somalia, which ranked as the largest single group of immigrants taking on Norwegian nationality. More than half of all Norway’s new citizens are women.

An administrator at the Swedish Migration Board (Migrationsverket) is facing disciplinary action after telling a family of Iraqi asylum seekers that their newborn baby looked like Saddam Hussein.

The man, who has worked at the agency for 30 years, is also under investigation for physically assaulting a female colleague and making derogatory remarks about a woman wearing a headscarf.

Norwegian TV2 reports that according to a Chr. Michelsen Institute (CMI) study, 40% of Iraqi asylum seekers who came to Norway and then returned voluntarily, are sorry about coming to Norway.

Pål Lønseth, state secretary at the Justice Ministry, says that the asylum seekers see that conditions at home are good, and that while in Norway they've put their life on standby.
