London: University considers stopping sale of 'immoral' alcohol on campus because it offends their Muslim students

Via the Daily Mail:
A university is considering ending the sale of alcohol on campus due to concerns from Muslim students.

London Metropolitan University could take action because a ‘high percentage’ of its students thought drinking was ‘immoral’, according to its vice chancellor.

Professor Malcolm Gillies raised the prospect of an alcohol-free campus after gauging the changing values from the influx of new students.

France: 'Suburbs becoming Muslim land', says journalist

Via 24heuresactu and France Info (French):

French suburbs are becoming 'Muslim land', French journalist and historian Alexandre Adler told France Info. Adler also said that many French Muslims want this, and that he's concerned about the self-administration against the State in those neighborhoods.

Adler said the violence in the banlieues can't be explained only as social problems, and that it's due to the Muslim doctrine that wherever Islam spreads is Muslim land. The banlieues can be compared to the Muslim areas of India, which eventually seceded and became Pakistan and Bangladesh.

France: Fast-food chain opens halal branches

France: Fast-food chain opens halal branches

Update: Small syntax fixes.

The Belgian fast-food chain Quick is experimenting with halal restaurants in France (see also here). Those branches serve only products which comply with the Islamic food requirements. Since mid-December, eight France Quicks changed over completely to halal food: Toulouse, Marseille (2), Roubaix, Villeurbanne, Argenteuil, Garges-lès-Gonesse and Buchelay.

A notice at the door informs the visitors of the Islam-law abiding character of the place. The meat is approved by experts linked to the local mosque and the Great Mosque in Paris.

Halal meat must be bled out meat from a restricted number of permitted animals, which are slaughtered without stunning and according to the Islamic requirements. Meat from carnivores or animals which died on their own, as well as pork which is mentioned explicitly in the Koran, are forbidden. The whole production chain where the meat is processed must also comply with the 'purity requirements'.

The circumstances in which the animal was bred, the quality of its food and shelter, the manner and distance of transport could all play a role in the decision whether the meat is halal.

The news about the French Quick branches was reason enough for the Belgian Vlaams Belang to sound the doomsday alarm, since "if it rains in Paris, it drips in Brussels".

"This issue is not as innocent as it looks at first sight," responds Vlaams Belang. "Big warehouses, stores and restaurants who sale or serve halal products are giving in to the pressue of radical Islam, which demands blind adherence to Shaira. Just by offering these products, people are giving radical Muslims the opportunity to further force their strict Islamic laws."

"By opening Islam-correct halal restaurants, Quick stimulates the rising Islamization," says the pary in a presss release. "If Flemish branches would also give in to the pressure of Sharia law, Vlaams Belang and Steden Tegen Islamisering (cities against Islamization) will no question act."

It seems that Quick isn't going to do so. "We're certainly not going to open any halal restaurants in Belgium in this fashion," says operational manager Dorian Verfaille of Quick. "The situation in France with its suburbs is socially and economically completely different than by us. What eventually might happen, dependent on the success in France, is that in existing restaurants we will add one or two halal dishes to the menu. Just as we now already offer vegetarian burgers. But certainly not in the short term."

Verfaille admits that halal branches can expect a lot of approval. "The first, in Toulouse, seem to run very well. We nevertheless had no publicity for it, everything happened via word-of-mouth advertising."

France: Companies confronted by religious demands

France: Companies confronted by religious demands

A third of French companies say they are concerned by demands from their employees regarding wearing the headscarf, holidays and prayers.

"Managing Eid is a real headache,' says the manager of a transport company. "Half of the bus-drivers are Muslim. When they all ask to be absent on that day, how do you assure 100% service?"

To anticipate these pressures, certain companies now distribute a calendar of all religious festivals to their foremen. While others repeatedly oppose 'absences for religious reasons'.

"Every company puts together a place for Allah. If the Muslim employees are many, they dictate the norm. Otherwise it's very random," says anthropologist Dounia Bouzar, who today publishes the results of an extensive study of the working world ("Allah a-t-il sa place dans l'entreprise?" "Does Allah have a place at work?"). An educational book where regretfully anonymous managers tell of daily life, the increase in demands.

A third of French companies expressed concern, principally in ÃŽle-de-France but also in the north-east and south-east of France, in the trade, services and construction sectors, according to the results of an Ifop poll from April 2008. "Can you fire an employee who starts wearing a headscarf?" managers often ask when turning to Dounia Bouzar to conduct an audit. Or repeating "Should the big holidays of Islam be considered vacation days?" In order to guide the companies, the anti-discrimination authority (HALDE) published its opinion last March. In essence: religious demands can be denied only when they penalize service. Internal regulations will be annulled by the courts if they ban the headscarf for no real reason. Since then the IMS philanthropic association, where Claude Bebear united the biggest French companies, has also decided to put out a guide on the topic.

Because the requests come from beyond the industrial sector now. "In banking, where the number of managers is important, there's an increase in religious demands. And in the automotive and construction sectors, the issue is raised among the administration," says Benjamin Blevier, of IMS. This new visibility fuels fears of an escalation. "Soon everybody will arrive with kippas, crosses and display Christ everywhere in the office," an HR manager predicted to Dounia Bouzar. "If I tolerate any request, it will grow," he worries.

While the anxiety is widely shared, the rules in the field vary widely. Paradoxically, Ramadan, which is very visible, is rather well accepted in the business world, where it looks like a cultural tradition, says Lylia and Dounia Bouzar. In the construction sector HR managers are particularly concerned about the risks of accidents, because employees who do not eat are weaker. they usually adjust the schedules if they have many practicing employees, explain the authors. In retail, long breaks are provided for breaking the fast, and not in midday. According to one official, restaurants remain open longer and offer halal soup, milk and fruit, a sort of basic requirement.

However, some managers of North African origin regret the communitarian aspects. "I'm an atheist. Yet I'm constantly offered to leave earlier," protested Faycal. "It's as if we said: today we commemorate the ascent of Jesus to Heaven and so we all finish at 3pm."

While Ramadan is tolerated, prayer at work causes problem by most employees and managers. Symbolically, prayer at work seems like an act of 'proselytizing'. "Prayer is at home," repeated most of the respondents. "It's out of the question that he'll pray while the others are working," said one boss. While elsewhere an employee got upset, asking why prayer was allowed while they were refused time to pick up their child from kindergarten.

In large companies prayer rooms have been nonetheless set up. Particularly in the automotive industry. One French manufacturer even built changing rooms. Conversely, a big Japanese firm had employees sign that they will not practice their religion in the workplace, in defiance of the law, says Dounia Bouzar.

As for the headscarf, it's still not very much understood. Except for junior positions, companies would like to prohibit it. But the legal precedents are based on the criteria of general law, says the anthropologist. "Simple contact with clients doesn't allow banning the headscarf." It should be shown that it contradicts the safety rules, that it can hurt the convictions of the surroundings, or that it harms performance or commercial interests. The general administration rules apply for religious demands.

London: Supermarket stops selling fresh non-halal meat

London: Supermarket stops selling fresh non-halal meat

For some reason Asda is not advertising this move, though it is running a big campaign around its new Asian clothing line and it's first World Food Store.

-----------

SUPERMARKET giant Asda has risked sparking a racial backlash in the place where the BNP won its first ever council, by closing its traditional fresh meat counter and replacing it with a halal only section.

The chain has decided to make the move at its large store on the Isle of Dogs, east London.

Within weeks, anyone wanting fresh pork chops or ham off the bone will have to go to the pre-packed meat section, with Muslim customers having a wider choice from the halal counter.

Asda insisted it was “responding to customer demand” and had done a deal with a local halal butcher to reflect the ethnic make up of the area’s population.

Yet figures show that while the borough of Tower Hamlets is almost half Muslim, the Isle of Dogs is about 80 per cent non-Bangladeshi.

(..)

Politicians were concerned last night that the move could reignite racial tension on the Isle of Dogs, where Derek Beackon won the BNP’s first council seat in 1993.

Paris: More on street prayers

Paris: More on street prayers

Secularist magazine Riposte Laïque continues its reports on Muslim prayers in the streets of Paris, around the mosques on the Rue Myrha and Rue Polonceau. The streets are closed off for about two hours during Friday prayers. This is not being reported by the mainstream French press.

In the maps below, the streets in red are completely closed off by the Muslims and the residents cannot enter or leave for about two hours. Streets in orange are blocked for vehicles, while streets in green are open for traffic but the sidewalks are taken over for prayer.

Netherlands: PVV targeting Islam children's songs on TV

Netherlands: PVV targeting Islam children's songs on TV

The PVV party is targeting songs on children's TV shows featuring Islam. The latest target is a song called "Baklava of Rijstevla". The song (here on Youtube) is about a kid who has to choose between his father in the Netherlands (his fatherland) and his mother in Morocco (his motherland). None of the songs are new - "Baklava of Rijstevla" was written for the Kinderen voor Kinderen show in 1993 - but they are still being shown on TV.

My song-analyzing skills are so-so, but it seems to me that "Allah Akbar" is used as a of saying "Netherlands or Morocco, only god knows". It also seems to me that the song portrays Morocco as better than the Netherlands, the kid wants to go to Morocco (he likes the food, he feels at home), but he currently lives in the Netherlands.

-----------

Spokesperson Martin Bosma wants Education Minister Plasterk to answer why the show is showing a song which repeats "Allah Akbar", the Jihad slogan, 27 times.

Bosma says this is the third time that the public broadcaster is broadcasting Islam-propaganda at children.

Bosma: "The Dutch are being humiliated in this way. We should accept Islamic imperialism and stand defenseless against it. That is the continuous message of the state broadcaster. Recently I asked the minister a parliamentary question about a children's program by Teleac where children were told by [show character] Koning Koos that on Eid ul-Adha everybody gets candy. There was recently also the Koekeloere program, also by Teleac, which explained what children should do on Ramadan. The multiculturalists don't have any shame anymore. The multicultural faith is almost dead in society, but on public television it's (subsidized) and still alive and well."

Germany: Turkish leader says all kids need Islamic holiday off

The leader of the Turkish Community in Germany (TGD) Kenan Kolat said Tuesday that non-Muslim schoolchildren should be allowed out of school for an important Islamic religious holiday.

"I think it would be good if one for one day, such as the Eid ul-Fitr following Ramadan, to let all of the kids off," Kolat told daily Berliner Zeitung.

"It would be a sign of tolerance," Kolat went on. "The Muslim children already have this day, also known as the Sugar Festival, off."

Kolat said that such a gesture would be a sign that German society is engaging with its immigrant population.

He also encouraged more sensitivity from teachers in German schools.

London: Mayor calls on non-Muslims to fast a day on Ramadan, learn more about Islam

London: Mayor calls on non-Muslims to fast a day on Ramadan, learn more about Islam

London Mayor Boris Johnson has urged non-Muslims to fast a day during the holy month of Ramadan to help get a better understanding of their Muslim neighbors, the Daily Mail reported Friday, September 4.

"I urge people, particularly during Ramadan, to find out more about Islam," Johnson said during a visit to East London Mosque and London Muslim Centre.

"Increase your understanding and learning, even fast for a day with your Muslim neighbor and break your fast at the local mosque."

(..)

The London Mayor praised the role of Muslims in challenging "traditional stereotypes."

"Whether it's in theatre, comedy, sports, music or politics, Muslims are challenging the traditional stereotypes," he said.

"[They are] showing that they are, and want to be, a part of the mainstream community."

(..)

The London Mayor gave tribute to the role played by British Muslims in building their society.

"Muslims are at the heart of every aspect of society," said Johnson.

"Their contribution is something that all Londoners benefit from."

Varying from officers, doctors and scientists, Johnson hailed Londoner Muslims for promoting the society.

"Muslim police officers, doctors, scientists and teachers are an essential part of the fabric of London," he said.

"Islamic finance is contributing to the economy by changing the way Londoners invest, save, borrow and spend."

Johnson, who succeeded Ken Livingstone, one of Britain's most colorful and popular politicians, who has been known for his strong defense of the British Muslims, also praised the Muslims' social role.

"There are valuable lessons that people of all backgrounds can learn from Islam," he said.

Belgium: Filip Dewinter about his new book

Belgium: Filip Dewinter about his new book

A couple of weeks ago Filip Dewinter was interviewed on Flemish TV show Terzake on occasion of his new book: 'Insha'Allah? The Islamization of Europe'. I wrote about the interview and planned to post a subtitled version, but never got around to it. For now, here's a translated transcript. Big thanks to Snouck for helping me with it.

---------

[This segment was preceded by past quotes from Dewinter, one of which spoke about 'our Europe']

Interviewer: Is there a place for Muslims in our Europe, Mr. Dewinter?

Dewinter: For Muslims there's certainly place in Europe, but the question is whether there's a place for Islam, for radical Islam. Let me put this straight, in this book I argue that , this book is not against the Muslims who live here as far as they respect our law, norms, values and way of life. This book is against the political ideology that Islam is, ultimately. And that's a big difference.

Interviewer: And how do you make the distinction?

Dewinter: I'm convinced that this book is clear. This book is a warning, is a call against the establishment of Islamization. Right now there's more than 20 million Muslims living in Western Europe, 50 million -

Interviewer: But you make the distinction?

Dewinter: But I make the distinction, naturally I make the distinction. And I think that this book is meant for all Muslims who don't agree with Islam. The moderate Muslims are those who don't want to bring to this place the radical interpretation of the Islam, or have the possibility to distance themselves from their own religion, and who really integrate into our European society.

Interviewer: For Muslim to integrate, Muslims must swear off Islam?

Dewinter: There are many moderate Muslims, but what is a moderate Muslim, who adapts Islam moderately, who knows Islam moderately. That doesn't yet mean that what I call the cultural Muslims are the true representatives of Islam. They are really not relevant, they are many but they're not relevant, because the radicals have the structures and mosques in their hands.

Interviewer: But the moderate Muslims, don't they also go to the mosque?

Dewinter: Some yes, some no, just like there are many Christians who -

Interviewer: Moderate Muslims can be greatly insulted by being described as a predator.

Dewinter: I'm a European. And that means that I respect freedom of religion. But that doesn't mean that I must think that Islam as a religion belongs here. Islam is a religion which is diametrically opposed to our values and norms: freedom of expression, separation of church and state, equality of men and women

Interviewer: And that it doesn't belong here will insult people

Dewinter: What somebody wants to cultivate in his head as religion, I have no issue with that. It's different when it comes to the rise of Islam. But in Europe this is a sacred right, I don't just say no to Islam, then, I only say no to Islam's structures which are newly expanded here in Europe, they don't belong here. Freedom of speech and also of religion should be respected and remain so.

Interviewer: This distinction is not clear in your book, when I read your book, it sounds like, as we saw in the report, like 20 years ago.

Dewinter: Madam, I think that Vlaams Belang made it clear that it has moved to the center on some of its positions and that also remains so. This is a nuanced book, in 250 pages I try to make an analysis, political analysis. When I say in the book that Islam is a predator, I mean by that that a predator attacks the weakest prey, and Europe is the old enemy of Islam, it was overrun twice by Islam, and that's happening for the third time

Interviewer: And you make a distinction between Islam and the Muslims? You may understand that they will take this personally.

Dewinter: The reason I say that Europe is the weakest prey, for relevant demographic reasons, for relevant politics, for the fact that we aren't daring and able to be proud of our own history, of our own history, and I say that's weak, for relevant multicultural reasons.

Interviewer: And this book is your own personal initiative or by assignment of your party?

Dewinter: This is a book that I wrote, as Filip Dewinter, I had our party administration read it, but this is a book of Filip Dewinter, to make it clear. It expresses points of view, which are quasi-identical with the standpoints of the party, but the book is written by me ...

Interviewer: Is it meant for the elections?

Dewinter: This is of course written at a moment when debate should be conducted. In these elections, this debate should certainly be conducted.

Interviewer: Yes, but people aren't concerned by other things, such as work-security, low income?

Dewinter: Absolutely, Madam. They are also concerned with other things besides immigration problems, with the Islamization problem, but I think that this has to do with everything else on the table. Right now, every year 75,000 new foreigners come into our country. If our country has 600,000 Muslims, if there are 20 million Muslims in Western Europe, then I can only conclude that Flemish jobs don't always go to Flemish workers. That European jobs don't always go to European workers. But very often to Islamic foreigners.

Interviewer: You think you will win the elections with that subject?

Dewinter: Madam, I don't only think about political issues, and about who wins the elections. I've been busy with this book for over a year and half and I'm publishing it now, clearly the debate should be on the order of the day and conducted also in this upcoming elections

Interviewer: Maybe you also have another subject matter than the core business of identity and Flemish nationalism, for example, which are taken over by other parties?

Dewinter: Yes, Madam, we have other subjects, but when I speak of other subjects, like recently happened about Flemish companies in Flemish hands, nobody in the media was interested. When I write a book about Islamization, I go from one studio to a newspaper interview. That says more about the media, than about myself.

Interviewer: Lijst Dedecker is breathing down your neck?

Dewinter: I think that Vlaams Belang is the original, and the original is always more in demand than the surrogate - may I finish? - it's original in the way it presents itself, and this book, among other, there will be more initiatives in this campaign, will make the profile of Vlaams Belang clear. It brings up the issues on which we have a monopoly. Islamization, immigration is our monopoly. If only for the reason that Dedecker says, I'm for open immigration, says Dedecker, I'm against immigration, on the contrary.

Interviewer: In the Flemish elections your party has 24.15% in the polls, how many do you expect to get?

Dewinter: As many as possible, Madam. As many as possible. The numbers should go up. I haven't read polls but as I have no crystal ball so I do not know the answer, but as many as possible and I hope that our party has new successes and this book is one of our clearly profiled and note the language of the man in the street, because certainly that's what the man in the street thinks.

Interviewer: Thank you.

Marseille: Basilica transformed into mosque?

The following pictures, published by the independent news agency Novopress, are from a mural in the children's hospital of Timone, Marseille.

The mural portrays the Notre Dame de la Garde basilica, a major landmark in Marseille, being painted by a djellaba wearing artist. Novopress felt that the Virgin Mother on belfry was being transformed by the artist in the painting into a mosque and decided to check further.

the basilica (Wikipedia)

the basilica in the mural vs the original (Novopress)

the painted basilica in the mural (Novopress)

The canvas (10 by 2 meters) has been displayed in the hotel lobby since Feb 3, 2005, commissioned by the "Le Blé de l'Espérance – Maguy Roubaud" organization in order to cheer up the ill children. It was drawn by Valérie Ciccarelli and two other artists and is intended to portray life in Marseille in a humorous manner. The artist had wanted to denounce colonization and the Islamization in the city.

Valérie Ciccarelli was surprised to hear of the various interpretations offered for her work. She explained that she was asked to make a mural of Marseille and that at that time many things were going on, including a mosque project, and that explains the painter in a djellaba replacing the belfry with a minaret. Ciccarelli adores the cosmopolitan side of Marseille but says she had no intention of putting in political connotations.

Netherlands: Arabist accuses bank of Islamist propoganda

Arabist Hans Jansen is accusing SNS bank of using Islamist propaganda on their site. I bring here the letters which were sent back and forth, as brought on the Dutch Hoeiboei blog.

==============================================

Madam, Sir,

I have put about ***** euro in savings by you. I see on your site Islamist propaganda: A woman in a type of headscarf which doesn't refer to a liberal form of Islam. Already before that you had on your site an Arab looking young man with a Muslim extremist beard showing the clients the soles of his feet, a standard insult in the Muslim world. It's known that Islamic schools commit fraud and for example pay for trips to Mecca with their entrusted money, according to recent news. [ed: I know of only one such school]. The last big Islamic bank, BCCI, went under with a fraud of millions. Have you become an Islamic bank? Did you hire an Islamic advertising agency? The trust in a bank is vulnerable, do you know that? Wouldn't it be better if a bank, just like the government, was religion neutral?

Sincerely,
Hans Jansen

==============================================

Dear Mr. Jansen,

Thank you for your email of July 28, where you stte that you don't appreciate that our site has a Muslim woman with a headscarf.

This was a deliberate choice of SNS Bank. We are a bank for everybody and our clients are then also a reflection of society. SNS Bank does not differentiate. For us everybody is equal and we wanted to show that. It is your right to think differently. It would be regretful if you decide to terminate your account. I respect your choice.

Sincerely,
[name withheld]

==============================================

Sir,

It's not only a Muslim woman. It's a Muslim woman whose clothing represents a political choice, and a particular interpretation of Islam. That you don't know that is dangerous and sad. What else don't you know yet? You wrongly write that I'll terminate my account. You still owe me interest. Your announcement that your bank makes no differentiation is certainly far from the truth. Would you place on your site pictures of girls who belong to the Black Stocking Church? Your implication that I do make a differentiation, in other words discriminate, is insulting.

With all due respect,
Jans Hansen

Flanders: Vlaams Belang campaigning against halal

Vlaams Belang will be conducting a campaign in the upcoming weeks to inform Flemish consumers about the increasing supply of halal products. "Consumers against Islamization" doesn't support a boycott, emphasized Filip Dewinter in a press conference. The growth of halal products does fit in with the radicalization of the Muslim movement.

Vlaams Belang is focusing on halal meat, where the butcher must be Muslim and follow strict regulations during the slaughter. The party says that according to some Muslim authorities the animal must not be anesthetized, and according to other Muslim authorities is is allowed, as long as its reversible.

Dewinter recognizes that not all Muslim strictly follow the halal regulations, and many don't consume halal slaughtered meat, as long as it's not pork. But for the past few decades the Muslim community has been radicalizing, the Quran is used as an authority and the Muslims in the ghettos are required to follow the Muslim behavior code more and more strictly.

According to Vlaams Belang this radicalization is also noticeable in consumerism. In many branches of the big warehouse stores there are halal products and food firms produce special halal brands. Dewinter says that giving in to the sharia demand concerning food open the door for further Islamization. He also points out that slaughter without anesthesia conflicts with the western ethical norms and more specifically with the law regarding animal welfare.
