A group of Kurds belonging to the banned Kurdistan Worker's Party (PKK) was arrested in Venice on Tuesday on suspicion of extorting money to use for armed operations in their native Turkey.

The suspects are accused by Italian investigators of using violence to force Kurdish immigrants living in northern Italy to pay a ''revolutionary tax'' to fund the PKK's fight against Turkey.

PvdA (Labour) MP Achmed Marcouch visited the Kurdish community of Amsterdam yesterday.

He called on the Kurds to enter into a debate with the Turks and denounce the PKK. Marcouch also said that Kurds should be able to feel safe in Amsterdam.

The MP further said that 'imported battles from Turkey and other countries in the Middle East in the shouldn't be fought out in the Netherlands with violence".

About 40 Kurdish organizations asked the Turkish community Thursday to respect them. They also ask the authorities to proetc the Kurdish population and to take judicial steps against "any form of aggression by Turkish rioters".

"We respect the Dutch state and its legal system, and ask the Turkish community and the Turkish organizations in the Netherlands to respect the fundamental rights of association, assembly and freedom of expression of every citizen, as well as the Kurds in the Netherlands."

Ever since the Kurdish separatist movement PKK cilled 24 Turkish soldiers last week, tensions increased also between Kurds and Turks in the Netherlands. An anti-PKK demonstration in Amsterdam Sunday got out of hand when a group of Turks - ultra-nationalists according to insiders - attacked a Kurdish center, resulting in injured and vandalism.

Around 50 expatriated Syrian Kurds gathered here Saturday for a two-day conference on how to strengthen Kurds inside Syria and get them more involved in efforts to overthrow Bashar al-Assad's regime.

"We want to push the Kurdish people inside Syria to support the revolution more... Kurdish people both inside and outside Syria need to work harder to change this regime," said Massoud Akko, a Kurdish writer living in Norway who helped organise the conference.

Several shots were fired in a confrontation between Kurds and Somalis Sunday evening in the Danish city of Odense.

The local police was called out to the Vollsmose district where they heard the shots and found several casings on the street and a hunting rifle in a bush.

Deputy police inspector Kirsten Fischer told Newspaq that there were some clashes over the weekend which culminated in the shooting Sunday, but it's probably personal and has nothing to do with gangs.

A 22 year old Somali man was later arrested and charged with attempted manslaughter. Kirsten Fischer says that they believe there's more to it and that they don't have much time to interrogate people and find out what the conflict was about.

The Danish police have evidence of a clear link between the Kurdish Roj TV and the PKK, who are on the EU's terror list.

For at least a year, the police have been holding photos showing top officials from ROJ TV on a secret visit to the PKK training camps. They've also had a witness for just as long, knowing of PKK's funds going to ROJ TV. And yet, the station continues to broadcast with a Danish license, and no one in charge has been held accountable.
