Belgium: No ban on scarf in elections committees

Brussels Prime Minister Charles Picque denies that election committee members in the voting booths will not be allowed to wear a head covering.

Instructions sent to Brussels voting places say that members of the election committee are not allowed to show political, philosphical or religious preferance.

Muslim women have already been told that they may not wear a scarf. Picque says that passage has been misunderstood and that it means that there should be no outward feature that clearly serves to influence the attitude and voting behavior of the voters or is considered as provocation.

The head of the elections committee of each voting bureau may asses the situation independently but will not be able to use a cultural tradition to refuse entrance.
