A 46 year old main from Hoogezand, in northeaster Netherlands, was sentenced for three months for polygamy.
The man married in 1988 in Morocco. Later he moved to the Netherlands where he married again. According to the prosecution, he married a second time only to get Dutch citizenship. Once he received citizenship, he in fact applied for a divorce. Next he brought his Moroccan wife to the Netherlands.
The man's lawyer does not agree with the verdict and will appeal. According to him, the Moroccan marriage was not valid since an official was mission at the religious ceremony.
