The number of students in Antwerp who speak a language other than Dutch at home continues to go up. Five years ago about 60% of elementary school students did not speak Dutch at home. In 2005 it went up to 65%, or 2/3. This according to an evaluation of the equal chances law in the Antwerp elementary education.
The risings trend is for the entire city. Between 2002-2005 it went from 37% to 44%. The general percentage is slightly lower than the percentage in the inner city.
It is a demographic fact that in the elementary schools in the inner city there are many more kids from non-Dutch speaking homes. In that area there are more young immigrant parents that are on average more kids than the ethnic parents.
