Spain: New plan restricts immigration

The Spanish government announced this week it plans to modify its immigration policy. The new policy will increase the family reunification criteria, extend the time authorities are allowed to keep undocumented under arrest, and create provisions to facilitate immigrants' return to their countries, reports El Nuevo Herald.

The policy will also create an incentive for immigrants to return to their own country by making an early payment of their unemployment subsidy. Immigrants participating in this program would be paid 40% of the subsidy in Spain and the 60% when they return to their own countries. The plan which is set to start in July is a response to Spain's economic difficulties and the increased number of unemployed immigrants. About 20,000 immigrants will be considered eligible for the program.
