Netherlands: Football club wants to cut down number of immigrants

The municipal council of Nijmegen will speak with an [amateur] football club which wants to reject immigrant players. Quick 1888 decided to do so since many ethnic Dutch members don't feel they belong to the club due to the large number of immigrants.

Moreover, immigrant parents are less likely to do something for the club than ethnic Dutch parents. The municipality of Nijmegen confirmed the reports about this in the regional media.

Currently, 80% of the 550 members of the club are of immigrant origin. The club wants to cut this total back to 50%.

"The College understand the problems of the club and takes them very seriously," according to a spokesperson. "But placing a quota on the number of players of immigrant origin is not the solution." The municipality expects to work things out with the club.

Provincial parliamentarian Toine van Bergen raised the issue of Quick 1888's plan by the municipality. Van Bergen says he thinks the club's subsidies should be suspended if Quick doesn't change their standpoint. "But I hope that the administration will realize that this is not a morally or legally practicable way."
