Germany: 9 years for 'honor' murder

A court in Germany has sentenced a man of Turkish origin to nine years in prison for the so-called "honour killing" of his sister. Ayhan Surucu's two brothers were found not guilty of conspiring in the murder. Twenty-three-year old Hatun Surucu was shot in the head by her brother in February 2005 while standing at a bus stop in a Berlin suburb. After being forced to marry a cousin in Turkey at a young age, she later left him and cut ties with her family, living independently with her five-year old son.

Surucu who was being tried as a minor faced a maxiumum sentence of ten years. It was the latest in a series of so-called honour killings recorded in Germany in recent years and sent shockwaves through the country. The case has reignited the debate over Germany's staunchly conservative Muslim population - descendants of the mainly Turkish "guest workers" who helped rebuild the post-war economy.
