Birmingham: Money raised for Swat Valley charity
KIND-hearted city Muslims joined world class cricketers to generate more than £135,000 for charity.
Stars of the Pakistani cricket team Shahid Afridi and Younus Khan, hosted the fundraiser at the International Convention centre to talk about the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Swat valley region in north west Pakistan.
More than £135,000 was raised by the charity talk and dinner on Monday which will enable Digbeth-based Islamic Relief to help thousands of people who are returning home to the region to rebuild their lives.
As a result of the conflict, there is very little or no access to clean water, primary healthcare, trauma counselling and education.
Habib Malik, an aid worker from Islamic Relief, said: “The fact that the event with Shahid Afridi and Younus Khan was sold out and that such a large amount of money was raised, is testimony to the generosity of the Birmingham people and their continued desire to do more to help those suffering in Swat.”
