France: Shakeup in halal market

French site Al-Kanz reports a shakeup in the local halal market - a new player has entered the scene.

Until now Isla Délice ruled the market as a virtual monopoly, but last week, without any fanfare, French distributor Groupe Casino started selling its own line of halal meat. The move was made just a few weeks before the start of the month of Ramadan. Last Ramadan Casino launched its own halal portral wassila.fr - enabling consumers to check which products were guaranteed halal. Wassila also serves as the label for the new line of halal products.

Al-Kanz expects this move to bring halal products up to a new level. According to a HalalFocus report from a couple of months ago, Casino is not the only one planning to enter the market. Other supermarket chains, including Wal-Mart, Carrefour and Tesco are currently developing their own in-house halal ranges.
