Melilla: Eid becomes official holiday
A Muslim fiesta has been included as an official fiesta in a Spanish city for the first time.
The Spanish Autonomous City of Melilla, an enclave in North Africa, has decided to mark Aid el Kebir or the Sacrifice Fiesta. Also known as the Lamb Fiesta it will be celebrated in Melilla for the first time on November 17 next year. It commemorates the permission granted by Ala to Abraham, that instead of scarifying his own son, he could sacrifice a lamb instead.
The decision to add the date was taken between the City Hall and the four main Islamic communities in Melilla and has no precedent in Spain since 1492.
