Belgium: Almost half of prisoners are foreigners

Of the 11,182 detainees in Belgian installations on Nov 15th, 2011, 44% (4,957) were not Belgian citizens. In Brussels 63% of prisoners were non-Belgians, followed by Flanders (44%) and Wallonia (38%). The prisoners come from 130 different countries. Morocco leads the list with 10.7%, followed by Algeria (5.4%), Romania (2.2%), France (2.1%), the Netherlands (1.9%), Italy (1.7%) and Turkey (1.7%).
