Antwerp: First alderman of immigrant origin
Via HLN (Dutch):
Flemish MP Güler Turan (sp.a) will become alderman in Antwerp, following Monica De Coninck's move to the new federal regime. Turan is the first Antwerp alderman of immigrant origin.
Municipal councillor Karim Bachar was offered the position, but passed for personal reasons. Previously Bachar, of Moroccan origin, said that he would have trouble leaving his current position as professional trainer of FT Antwerp. Additionally, the next council elections are rather soon, in October 2012.
Güler Turan (36) is of Turkish origins, and has been in the municipal council since 2007. She's been a member of the Flemish parliament since 2009 and will continue in that position. She will take over the position of Alderman of youth and housing.
