With the start of the Ramadan this Saturday, dozens of imams are coming to Belgium from Egypt and Morocco. They are annually flown over to come and preach in local mosques. At the end of the month they return to their homeland.
Fifty imams came this Friday. In Belgium there are about 400,000 Muslims, mostly of Moroccan and Turkish origin, which amounts to about 4% of the population.
There are 328 mosques, with about 300 imams. Since the mosques and imams are not always officially recognized, they are mostly paid by the local religious community.
