Private security guards have been installed at 13 primary and high schools in Berlin in a controversial pilot program to combat a rise in school violence. The guards check student ID cards, patrol schoolyards to keep out strangers and accompany pupils to classes outside school premises. The schools are all located in the Berlin suburb of Neuköln that is known for its social problems and a large immigrant population. The pilot program will run for an initial period of six months. Authorities will then assess its effectiveness and decide whether to expand it.
