Prison guards have foiled a plot by al Qaeda terror suspects to murder a member of staff after taking him hostage.
Members of the notorious Muslim Boys gang were said to be planning a "spectacular show of strength" at Belmarsh prison.
A category A inmate named Saleem was caught on Christmas Eve with detailed plans of the jail and the alarm response times of staff.
He was in Houseblock One, the scene of previous violence involving the Muslim Boys gang.
A prison source told the Daily Mirror: "We understand some prisoners were plotting to maim or even kill a staff member after holding him hostage. It was designed to be high-profile and high impact.
"There is a huge sense of relief that a major plot has been scuppered. But at the same time it has heightened fears that the safety of staff can no longer be guaranteed."
It is the latest in a string of attacks on warders at the jail. Last year, four prison officers were beaten with pool cues by al Qaeda suspects during a riot.
In a separate incident, three officers were attacked by members of the Muslim Boys.
Staff at the prison are said to be angry over what they say is a "softly softly" approach to the Muslim gang by Belmarsh's governor Claudia Sturt.
Warders claim members virtually control the south-east London jail and are allowed to intimidate other inmates into joining them.
Hate preacher Abu Hamza was permitted to have his meals cooked only by fellow Muslims.
In 2006 chief inspector of prisons Anne Owers warned that Muslim gangs were operating within Belmarsh.
A spokesman for the prison said: "We do not discuss individual prisoners or security issues."

Hold your nose when you read this story! First it's the Daily Mail the UK newspaper that backed Hitler in the thirties and hasn't changed that much. Second it's source is probably the POA (Prison Officers Association). Google them to find what they're like!
Of course your right. Mirror = Nazis. Muslim terrorists would never kill a prison officer. Pure propaganda.
