The Belgian Muslim Executive had gotten about 6.3 million euro since its establishment in 1999, which comes out to 644,000 euro a year. This according to Justice Minister Jo Vandeurzen today in the parliament justice committee.
The Muslim Executive, the representative body of Muslims in Belgium, is now dead. Several weeks ago the executive couldn't be put together and there are several different judicial investigations into fraud within the organization.
The chairman which had meanwhile resigned is suspected of forgery, use of counterfeit document and abuse of partnership goods. The Belgian state has started a civic suit against the organization.
The justice minister is not clear how to continue with Muslim representation in the country. On March 14 a general gathering will try to put together a new executive. Meanwhile there are different proposals from the Muslim community. Vandeurzen will seriously study all of them.
Parliamentarian Rob Van de Velde thinks the government shouldn't get involved with religions and shouldn't subsidize them either. He says all religious must pay for themselves.
