Rome's conservative mayor, Gianni Alemanno, has sent a goodwill message to Muslims for their holy fasting month of Ramadan which began in Italy on Monday.
"I know that Muslims devote this month to God, through fasting. But it is also characterised by a spirit of joy and of celebration," Alemanno (photo) said.
"As Mayor of Rome, I send my best wishes to the Muslim community for the sacred month of Ramadan."
Alemanno said he hoped Muslims and their families would spend the month "in peace and great happiness."
"Too often, sacrilegious and shameful acts of terrorism, have spoiled Ramadan and I truly hope such acts will never be repeated again," Alemanno said, without specifying any particular attacks.
He called on Rome's Muslims to provide "an example for Muslims worldwide and all the citizens of Rome on how dialogue and mutual understanding between societies and cultures is valuable and enriching for the whole of society, and above all crucial to peace."
"Peaceful coexistence between religions and cultures and the genuine respect for identities are the only route to fruitful integration and a more mature society," Alemanno stated.
Alemanno said during Ramadan he wanted to meet members of Rome's Muslim community, whose "numerous" members include citizens from Africa and Asia.
