Sweden: Application of Sharia in Sweden and the EU course

Lunds University offers a course on the "Application of Sharia in Sweden and the EU".

The course is described as follows:

Muslim groups have sometimes proposed that Sharia should be recognized in Swedish and European legislation.  This is often seen as demands to introduce hudud punishments.  But what is really Sharia, and what do various groups mean when they speak of applying it?  What many don't know is that Sharia is already applied here.  It happens as unofficial council in Muslim associations, but also in Swedish courts in the context of private international law.  When they deal with the family law of Muslim countries, which are based on Sharia.

The course deals with the development of Islamic legal tradition after the emergence of Islam and how Sharia's role changed in the modern Muslim nation states.  The focus on Sharia's application in Sweden and Europe and how Swedish and European judges interpret in practice concepts from the Islamic legal tradition.
