Belgium: Detention centers 'closed' to Muslims on Ramadan

The Liege police arrested two illegals over the weekend, a Moroccan and an Iraqi, but the Aliens' Office didn't accept them into the closed detention center in Vottem since they are religious Muslims and it's Ramadan.

According to La Dernière Heure, which published this information, the reason is that it's simply too complicated to manage. In a closed center for illegals the people are grouped by wing: they live together in groups of forty, and they eat meals together. It is difficult as it-is, sometimes, to have very different cultures living together.

During the Muslim month of fasting it is difficult to separate the timetables. It's impossible to wait till sunset before everybody eats and it's impossible to isolate or concentrate the Muslims any more.

Therefore, in this period, the Aliens' Office doesn't want to 'saturate' its closed detention centers with Muslims.

The files are reviewed on a case by case basis: Recidivists, people who have been ordered to leave the country for extended periods, and those who refuse to comply, are still being captured regardless of their religion.

The minister of the interior said that deportations and repatriations continue as usual.
