Netherlands: American Somali arrested on terrorism charges
Sunday night Dutch police arrested a Somali in the Dronten refugee center.
According to the US the 43 year old man is involved in supporting international jihad and therefore the US asked the Netherlands to arrest him, according to a prosecution spokesperson on Tuesday.
According to a spokesperson for the Dutch intelligence service AIVD this case is based on information from the service.
The Americans want the Somali extradited. On Tuesday the suspect appeared in court in Rotterdam and he will be held for the next sixty days for the extradition process.
According to the prosecution the man had been in the Netherlands since the end of 2008. Before that he lived in Minneapolis in the US. According to the US he financed weapons for terrorists and in 2007 and 2008 helped others to travel to Somalia.
These people were supposedly trained in an al-Shabaab training camp, an Islamist terrorist organization in the east-African country. The prosecution further says that one of them committed a suicide attack with a truck full of explosives in the independent state of Puntland in north-east Somalia, in October of last year.
