Denmark: Cousin-marriages not necessarily coerced

The Danish integration ministry lost a case in court. The court overruled the assertion that a marriage between cousins was coerced.

A marriage between cousins from Roskilde was not coerced, according ot the Eastern High Court. The integration ministry claimed it was, and refused to let the woman live in Denmark.

The ministry's officials claimed that it was doubtful that both parties wished to enter the marriage. But this evaluation had come to court twice now, and in both cases, one in Glostrup and one in the high court, the judges believed the couple.

Both the cousins come from Turkey and during the trial the court heard the 28 year old husband, his 26 year old wife and various other family members describe the details of the relationship.

The statements were in agreement and sincere, the court decided.

The couple's lawyer says that it's time the integration ministry change their practice in such cases and that it will be nice if the investigation was conducted better before getting to a decision.
