The Copenhagen District Court has determined that two Tunisian men charged with planning to kill Mohammed cartoonist Kurt Westergaard should remain in custody
Two Tunisian men who allegedly plotted to murder Mohammed cartoonist Kurt Westergaard are 'a danger to national security' according to the Copenhagen District Court, which on Tuesday upheld their continued imprisonment until 12 August.
The court's decision was based on evidence presented by the National Police and national intelligence agency PET, which judge Marianne Madsen believed made it 'likely' that the two men were guilty of the charge of conspiracy to commit murder.
Westergaard is the artist responsible for the Mohammed drawing depicting the prophet with a bomb in his turban.
The Tunisians' defence lawyers plan to appeal the ruling, saying they will take the case to the Supreme Court if necessary. It was a Supreme Court decision 3 July that resulted in the case being sent back to the city court due to a lack of sufficient evidence to uphold the suspects' continued detention.
In February, the Immigration Ministry issued a decision to deport the two suspects back to Tunisia - a decision that can only be overturned by the Refugee Council.
