Amsterdam: 84 calls to honor violence hotline

The Amsterdam municipality announced Thursday that the municipal honor murder hotline received 84 calls this year.  They came from victims or social workers.  The hotline exists since the beginning of this year.

In 45% of the cases there was an issue of physical violence.  The rest were mental or other forms of pressure.  85% of the victims are women.

The Amsterdam municipality, police and public prosecutor signed an agreement Thursday where they officially agreed to deal with honor related violence.  Civil servants and agents who deal with the problem will receive guidance about the symptoms shown by victims.

In honor murder a family member is punished for tainting the family honor.  Often this has to do with chastity.  In Rotterdam the authorities joined together a while ago in order to deal with honor related violence.
