Vatican: Muslim writer in state newspaper

The editor in chief of L'Osservatore Romano, Giovanni Maria Vian, will probably satisfied at the end of the year.  Since the 56 year old professor, church hisotrian and writer took over heading the Vatican's half official newspaper last fall, he succeeded in changing it from a sleepy papal state newspaper into a paper that excites international attention.

(..)

The attitude of the new editor is that the newspaper shouldn't just report news but also explain then and think of alternatives.  Commentary, discussions and even controversy are the way forward for the papal paper.  The task from now for editor Vian is to find a balance between loyalty to his employer on the one hand and the fascination with conflicts and surprises on the other hand.

The first big trial might come soon.  L'Osservatore Romano has had affiliated Jewish writers for a long while.  But in the new year a Muslim column writer, Khaled Fouad Allam, will also make his mark on the paper.  He is a professor at the University of Trieste and an expert in the relationship between Islam and the Christian West.
