Sweden: Danish 'pilgrim fraudsters' arrested

Police in Malmö have arrested a Danish travel agent suspected of stealing money and passports from hundreds of would-be pilgrims.

The travel agent and another person were arrested at the customs post in Lernacken, in Malmö. The pair were arrested on suspicion of involvement in defrauding hundreds of people from all over Europe who had booked to go on pilgrimages to Mecca.

The men were found to be carrying a number passports when they were arrested, including that of a Gothenburg man who had reported the fraud. A number of Swedes have reported paying 18,000 kronor and handing over their passports to the man, after which they say they never heard from him again.
