Finland: Cartoon protest

A group of Muslims staged a peaceful demonstration Saturday on the steps of the Finnish Parliament protesting the reprinting of a caricature of the Prophet Muhammad in Danish and Swedish newspapers.

Around 30 people gathered for the demonstration which was organized by the Federation of Islamic Organizations in Finland. The peaceful protest lasted about an hour.

Several Danish newspapers and one Swedish newspaper last week reprinted a controversial cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad as what they say was an exercise of freedom of the press.

The caricature is part of a series originally published by the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten in September 2005 which gave rise to violent demonstrations in a number of Islamic countries in early 2006.
