Norway: You're Muslim, aren't you?

The following is part of a story written to Aftenposten by an 18 year old girl, who signed "shocked girl". She writes she was born in Norway, and is dark-skinned. Sitting in the Oslo metro with two friends from the US (two white and one 'caramel-colored'), they spoke English with each other, until they were accosted by a woman.

---

Suddenly a woman on the side asks what type of group we are, and we, who thought she was trying to be nice answered happily that we are a group of friends. Wrong answer, and the woman asks: What do you mean by that? She continues: Are you Muslims?

None of us is a Muslim. Two are christian, one Bahai and one something else, as as true as it is, we answer 'no'.

What happens next is awful, she points at me and asks: You're Muslim, are you not. I and my friends look at each other confused, not knowing what we should say. She points and says, in any case you are not a member of the Church of Norway! she continues her ridicule and asks my friend: where are you from? She answers New York city. Then she looks at me and asks, what with you, where are you from?

---

At the point the woman had to get off, leaving the girls shocked. Somebody in the next seat apologized and said it was the first time she experienced such a thing, and hoped that it wouldn't destroy their impression of Norway.
