Luton: Muslim scout leader nominated for youth award

A Luton man who helps lead the county's only Muslim Scout group has been nominated in the Beds Police Young People of the Year awards.

Waqar Sheikh, 23, the assistant group leader of the 25th Beech Hill Islamic Society of Britain Scouts, is in the running to win the top prize of £1,000 with £2,000 to give to other young people who give to others.

His Scout group has 50 boys and girls aged between six and 14 and meets at Beech Hill school in Dunstable Road.

He is also section leader for the cubs aged 8 to 11, planning meetings and undertaking administrative tasks.

He presents a children's hour on community radio station Radio Ramadan and has taken part in various charity events.

As well as the police, Bedfordshire and Luton Fire and Rescue Service and Luton Airport are involved in organising the awards.
