Århus: Five arrested for cartoonist murder plans

In a large action Danish police arrested five people this morning, suspected of planning to murder cartoonist Kurt Westergaard.

DR Nyheder learned that the arrests took place in the Århus area. Three of the suspects are Danish citizens, and two are foreign citizens awaiting deportation.

The arrests come after several months that the Danish Security Intelligence Service (PET) watched the group.

Kurt Westergaard is one of the 12 cartoonists who published cartoons of Muslim prophet Muhammed on Sep. 30. 2005. Westergaard's cartoon was one of the most discussed, he drew Muhammed with a bomb in his tuban.

Jyllands-Posten's chief editor, Carsten Juste, couldn't say much about the action but said that the management was aware of the case for several months. He is glad that the police acted and had apparently conducted a successful operation. He added that Kurt Westergaard is doing well.
