Belgium: Workers may not change holidays
Employees may not decided about their holidays on their own, the Belgian National Labor Council (NAR) announced. At the end of last year several Muslim organizations had nonetheless asked for a holiday during Eid al-Adha.
Many Muslims need to take a day off from work in order to celebrate that holiday. That regularly causes a lot of irritation and problems.
Therefore the organizations proposed 'floating holidays'. The employee would be able to choose whether Eid al-Adha will be a vacation day, but he'll do it in exchange for working on another holiday, for example Easter Monday.
The NAR now dismissed the proposal. It would cause companies too many organizational problems. Minister of Employment Joƫlle Milquet (cdH) follows the NAR standpoint.
