Netherlands: Pushing Turkey to exempt Dutch from army service

The PvdA party wants the Maxime Verhagen, the foreign minister, to push the Turkish authorities to exempt Turkish Dutch from army service.

Parliament members Angelien Eijsink says in an interview on the TV program Netwerk that this was most pressing by Turkish Dutch who worked for the army and police.

There's a 15 month army service duty in Turkey. Turks outside the country can buy an exemption for about 5000 euro. They then need to do a shortened service of three weeks or lose their Turkish nationality.
