Utrecht: Sentencing for "Jews to the gas"
On Friday the court in Utrecht (Netherlands) sentenced Ibrahim I (30), from Zeist, to 30 hours community service and three weeks conditional jail time for calling out "Jews to the gas". Mohamed B. (25) from Middelburg got a fine of 400 euro.
Both men were present in the Gaza Demonstration on January 15 in Utrecht. During this demonstration the slogan "Hamas, Jews to the Gas" was called out. Plainclothes agents saw both men participate in that. The court said this slogan was unnecessarily offensive and insulting for an entire population group.
The public prosecutor argued that freedom of speech was curtailed when this type of offensive things were called out. but both suspects said they had no political motives. During the demonstration they were in the center of Utrecht for shopping.
B. said he regretted participating. I. denied it. But two agents saw him inciting the crowd. Since he was on probation, he got a bigger punishment.
