Netherlands: More immigrants in parliament

The percent of immigrant parliament members has increased slightly in the recent elections in comparison with 2006: from 8% to 10.7%. the percentage of women also increased: from 36.7% to 40.6%. This according to a study published by the Centre for Political Participation (IPP).

Traditionally after every election the IPP researchs how many women and immigrnats were voted in. This is based on the results as determined by the Electoral Council, and not the composition of parliament after the government is formed. The result is compared with the outcome of previous elections.

The PVV has one immigrant in its ranks, named Antillean James Sharpe, who apparently is not counted by the IPP. Including him changes the totals and the percentages. The new figures are in parenthesis.

The total of (non-Western) immigrants is parliament increased from 12 to 16 (17) people: 8 (9) men, 8 women. This is 10.7% of all parliament members. The percent of non-Western immigrants in the Netherlands is 11.2%. Immigrants are therefore almost proportionally represented in parliament. Nine of the 17 immigrant parliament members were in parliament already before the 2010 elections. Eight parliament members, according to the adjusted figures, are new.
