Denmark: Three months in jail, waiting for riot trial

A 17 year old boy who was arrested in February after speaking on TV about the riots in Klundborg is still under arrest, three months later.

He is suspected of inciting to riots in the interview and for arson and stone throwing against the police.

His lawyer says he extremely unhappy about the fact that it's taking the police such a long time to prepare the case to go to court. His client is a school student who has now missed three months.

In the interview, broadcast on Feb. 14th, he said that they will continue to riot until people respect them. There will be more and more and this evening there will be much more.

On Tuesday's the boy's arrest was extended for another 14 days, though according to the prosecution his time in jail now will be taken off the expected sentence. The police attorney say they estimate his stay in jail is proportional to the punishment they will demand. [ed. in other words, the police is not trusting the courts and has made sure he sits in jail for the time they deem appropriate]

She expects the case to be ready for court by May 13th, before arrest needs to be extended again.

Due to his age, the suspect is currently in a youth institution. He denies all the accusations and claims that before the interview the journalist told him that he could say whatever he wanted because there's freedom of speech in Denmark. He did so and was later arrested for publicly inciting to a crime.
