Netherlands: Rather Turks than the Pope

The Historical Museum Den Briel recently acquired a replica of a rare medal of the Geuzen, who fought the Spanish in the 16th century (more on Wikipedia).

The medal is in the shape of a crescent moon. On the front it says "Rather Turks than the Pope", and on the other side, "Out of aversion to the mass".

The Protestants could be happy that they have the Catholic States as a buffer. They stoped Mohammedans in Lepanto and Viena...

This sentence is too similar to the famous one by Notaras:

"I would rather see a Muslim turban in the midst of the City (ie, Constantinople) than the Latin mitre,"

If this was true (I cannot believe it) one could say that heaven heard him:

"De Geuzen" were barbarious pirates hired by the Dutch royals. Attacking their own people, the city of Den Briel was totaly ruined by the attack, woman rapped and many dead. Still many royalist Dutch celebrate the event.

This latest finding only shows how little has changed.
