Netherlands: Imam enlisted to fight Moroccan crime

An imam of the Moroccan mosque in Veenendaal, the Netherlands, is calling on his follower to help look for a number of violent attackers.

Last weekend, three people were robbed and abused by perpetrators who were probably of Moroccan origin.

Mayor Ties Elzenga of Veenendaal is seriously concerned about the safety in his municipality. Elzenga called the incidents shocking and urged residents to report this type of incidents more often, he said after talks Wednesday with the police, parents, youth and the mosque administration.

The Utrecht town has known problems with Moroccan youth for quite a while. In talks with those involved, a solution is sought. According to the spokesperson, it was decided Wednesday that the imam would devote attention to the issues during Friday prayer.
