Brussels: Protest against school veil ban

Several hundred students of Koninklijk Atheneum Andrée Thomas in Vorst protested in front of their school this morning against a planned veil ban. The school has many Muslim students.

The school management decided that any dress showing indications of belief, among them the veil, will be banned. Scores of girls wear the veil now in school.

The youth protested against the regulation that they consider as damaging freedom of speech and religion. Several protesters held banners with the slogan "without a veil we leave". The school management justified the decision by pointing to future social integration and the respect for other beliefs.
