Rotterdam: Terrorist sentenced to 18 months

The court in Rotterdam sentenced 33 year old Allal El Y. to 18 months in jail and TBS (psychiatric custody). The Rotterdam resident was found guilty of preparations and promotion of a terrorist crime.

The public prosecution demanded two weeks ago 9 months and TBS. According to the judges the man look for weapons by email and tried to become a member of a rifle association. He also put on the internet diverse texts with a racial Islamic meaning. Further he looked for information to commit terror attacks. He aimed at Jewish and American installations.

The court said Y had with his crimes "seriously intimidated the Dutch population". Moreover it was not the first time that the man had been convicted for such similar acts.

In 2004 the court in The Hague gave him two years in jail of which 8 months were conditional since he sent threatening mails to NOS (Dutch broadcaster). Y threatened with terror attacks. The Israeli embassy received a similar letter. The court also weighed in the fact that the threats had come in a period when fear of terror attacks was great.
