Politicians and cemetery administration are leading the way for a Muslim cemetery in Herning (Region Midtjylland). This will be the second Muslim cemetery in Denmark.
The cemetery will allow Muslims in Jutland to bury their dead in Denmark. The cemetery will be owned and administered by Muslims, and run according to Muslim requirements.
Herning's mayor, Lars Krarup, is positive about the idea and intends to have a plan in place during the spring. The area being considered is 35,000sqm to the north of Herning, next to an existing cemetery. The existing cemetery doesn't need the area, and welcomes a Muslim cemetery.
Today there's one Muslim cemetery in Denmark, in Brøndby, next to Copenhagen.
