Rotterdam: Municipality refuses to intervene in mosque dispute

Sixty mosque members of the Essalam mosque handed in a petition to Rotterdam mayor Ivo Opstelten asking him to intervene in the dispute between mosque members of the mosque administration. "We're not ruling out that there will be people killed," said the petition.

Opstelten refused, saying that mediation was not the job of the municipality. "You should jointly solve that."

A court handed five 'renegade' mosque members a 6 month restriction order last week. The banned mosque members claim to have 300-400 supporters within the mosque membership. They have been fighting the mosque administration regarding the financing of a new mosque building by Dubai investors.

For the time being, the mosque members announced a new protest: they called upon the community to come to the mosque on Friday, but not to participate in the Friday prayer.
